What is an AI assistant?

An AI assistant is a conversational AI you work with turn by turn — what it is, how it works, how it differs from an agent, and how assistants work on Sigrix.

An AI assistant is a conversational AI you work with. You type or speak, it responds, and you go back and forth — it holds the thread of the conversation, answers follow-ups, and calls on tools or reference material when a task needs them. Most of what people mean when they say "AI" today is an assistant: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and the support bot in the corner of a website are all assistants.

How an AI assistant works

An assistant sits on top of a large language model and adds three things that make it feel like a helper rather than a raw model:

  • Memory of the conversation. It remembers what you said earlier in the same session, so you can refine ("make it shorter", "now in French") without starting over.
  • A persona. A defined voice and set of behaviour rules — terse editor, patient tutor, on-brand support rep — so its answers stay consistent. That reusable voice layer is itself a persona on Sigrix.
  • Skills it can pick up. When a question needs a specific capability — summarise a PDF, look something up, follow a checklist — the assistant loads a skill to do it, then carries on the conversation.

The defining trait is that an assistant is multi-turn and collaborative: it works step by step with you, and you stay in the loop on every turn.

AI assistant vs AI agent

The line people most often blur is assistant vs agent:

  • An assistant works with you — conversational, turn by turn.
  • An agent works for you — you give it a goal and it runs the steps on its own, then hands back a finished result.

If you want a back-and-forth helper, you want an assistant. If you want to delegate a whole task, you want an agent. We break the distinction down in full in AI assistant vs AI agent, and both sit inside the wider 5 AI building blocks.

What an AI assistant can do

  • Write and edit — drafts, rewrites, summaries, translations.
  • Explain and tutor — walk you through a topic and answer follow-ups at your level.
  • Support and triage — answer customer questions, route the hard ones to a human.
  • Analyse — read a document or dataset you give it and pull out what matters.

Because it is conversational, an assistant is at its best where the task benefits from your judgement on each turn — you review, correct, and steer as you go.

AI assistants on Sigrix

On Sigrix, an assistant listing ships as more than a chat box: it comes with a persona, a list of skills, and sample dialogues so you can see how it behaves before you buy. You get an editable copy you own, so you can adapt its voice and rules to your own brand and run it on ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

FAQ

What is an AI assistant? An AI assistant is a conversational AI you work with turn by turn. Built on a large language model, it holds the thread of a conversation, adopts a consistent persona, and calls on skills when a task needs them — ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are all assistants.

What is the difference between an AI assistant and an AI agent? An assistant works with you: multi-turn and conversational, with you reviewing each step. An agent works for you: you give it a goal and it runs the steps autonomously, then returns a finished result. See AI assistant vs AI agent.

Is ChatGPT an AI assistant? Yes. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are AI assistants — conversational interfaces on top of a large language model. On Sigrix you can buy assistant listings that come pre-configured with a persona, skills, and sample dialogues.

Do I need to be technical to use an AI assistant? No. An assistant is designed for plain-language conversation. On Sigrix an assistant listing includes the persona and skills already wired up, so you drop it into your model and start chatting.

Can I build my own AI assistant? Yes — compose a persona and a few skills into an assistant, or buy one that already works and edit it. The 5 AI building blocks guide shows how the pieces fit, and you can sell what you build once it works.
